January: Coldest Ever

Although greenhouse gases — water vapor and carbon dioxide, primarily — have built up in the atmosphere in recent decades, 1997’s January was the coldest in the 19 years since highly accurate climate satellites began measuring earth temperatures — confounding computer models that predict global warming.

"As observers of the global warming debate," says Dr. Robert Balling, director of the office of climatology at Arizona State University, "we must wonder why the press has not covered this remarkable measurement. Be assured that if January 1997 had been the warmest on record, the story would have received front page coverage around the world."
